Enormously visceral, emotionally gripping, and imbued with the belief that justice is possible even after the most horrific of crimes, Alice Sebold's compelling memoir of her rape at the age of eighteen is a story that takes hold of you and won't let go.Sebold fulfills a promise that she made to herself in the very tunnel where she was raped: someday she would write a book about her experience. With Lucky she delivers on that promise with mordant wit and an eye for life's absurdities, as she describes what she was like both as a young girl before the rape and how that rape changed but did not sink the woman she later became. It is Alice's indomitable spirit that we come to know in these pages. The same young woman who sets her sights on becoming an Ethel Merman-style diva one day (despite her braces, bad complexion, and extra weight) encounters what is still thought of today as the crime from which no woman can ever really recover. In an account that is at once heartrending and... see complete book description

I have become a huge fan of Alice Sebold's writing. I heard huge reviews on Lovely Bones that reading that book I was immediately drawn to finding her other books. Lucky was fantastically written and I look forward to her future books.

Yes! Maybe she is too liberal with graphic detail, but its an inspiration story and definitely worth reading to the end. The way she makes it so graphic just makes you more appreciative of her courage.

I'll be honest..I hadn't read Lovely Bones when I started Lucky...I got a cheap copy of it at the used book store and just randomly picked it off my shelf one night before going to bed...big mistake.lol. For the most part the book wasn't that bad...but the first few chapters with the rape scene....really made it hard for me to sleep that night as I'm a single female LIVING ALONE! Books don't tend to get me all up in a panic like that...but those first few chapters really worked on my nerves....overall...I think this is a really important book for anyone to read..especially women.

I absolutely love this book, I couldn't put it down not one time. I would read this book over and over again. "Lucky" has lots of understanding about the world and the people in it.

Too real for me, I couldn't get past page 20 - the bulk of the reality that is rape.
