Lucky: A Memoir

by Alice Sebold

Enormously visceral, emotionally gripping, and imbued with the belief that justice is possible even after the most horrific of crimes, Alice Sebold's compelling memoir of her rape at the age of eighteen is a story that takes hold of you and won't let go.Sebold fulfills a promise that she made to herself in the very tunnel where she was raped: someday she would write a book about her experience.... Impactful. From her very real experience she aptly takes us through all the emotions of a brutal rape and the frustrations of the prosecuting the rapist. Balanced with her witty humor. Uncomfortable to read at times - but worth it - parts seemed to drag with some repetition, but hell - she was raped and I was willing to be patient as she shared all the details that seemed important to her.

I was really anticipating this book because of Lovely Bones... But this book was such a drag and I didn't even finish it. It was that boring.

I have become a huge fan of Alice Sebold's writing. I heard huge reviews on Lovely Bones that reading that book I was immediately drawn to finding her other books. Lucky was fantastically written and I look forward to her future books.

I'll be honest..I hadn't read Lovely Bones when I started Lucky...I got a cheap copy of it at the used book store and just randomly picked it off my shelf one night before going to bed...big mistake.lol. For the most part the book wasn't that bad...but the first few chapters with the rape scene....really made it hard for me to sleep that night as I'm a single female LIVING ALONE! Books don't tend to get me all up in a panic like that...but those first few chapters really worked on my nerves....overall...I think this is a really important book for anyone to read..especially women.

I absolutely love this book, I couldn't put it down not one time. I would read this book over and over again. "Lucky" has lots of understanding about the world and the people in it.

Too real for me, I couldn't get past page 20 - the bulk of the reality that is rape.
