What the heck? This doesn't fit with any of the other Dirk Pitt books at all. Th eplot was alright, but it bugged me that he refers to this incident so much in the other books and it doesn't even make sense.

Dirk Pitt starts right here. Worth reading just for that reason. It isn't anywhere near being the best Pitt book but it is worth reading to get the full picture of such a great literary character.

This is the first book out of the NUMA series introducing Dirk Pitt, the first book that started it out. Drama, suspense, plenty of action and adventure to get you ready for the other books in the series.

Reading a Dirk Pitt book is like watching a really good Johnny Quest show. Fun and action packed.

This is the first Cussler book that I have read. It was fun, fast-paced, and I really enjoyed it. I am starting on Cussler's first book next, The Mediterranean Caper.

Classic Cussler intrigue, but familiar plot line. Good for those who want to get started in the series. If you've read any other Dirk Pitt adventures, you'll probably figure out the ending by page 50.

A friend of mine loves this author and has always encourage me to try his stuff out. I finally decided to try it out. I started with this, the first Dirk Pitt adventure. I thought the writing and plot were decent. The characters were pretty cliche and Dirk was the stereotypical macho guy.

The story was engaging and the suspense kept me wanting to read more. I'll probably read more in the series, but I doubt I'll become as big of a fan as my friend.

This was the first Dirk Pitt novel and it introduced his character well. I'll always enjoy the way he mellowed out his writing of Pitt's sexual escapades.
