This book wasn't as cogent as his last, but it did instill in my the burning desire to see Venice (I never had it before).
Just as many (if not more) characters seem to live in and around Venice as Savannah and they are brought to life equally well in this book.
Though it's been criticised for being too gossipy, I find many truths in life seem to come from gossip and most people spend their lives on that plane, so why not a book?
I'd recommend this to anyone.

I thought it would solely focus on the burning of the Fenice, but felt the book meanered around Venice for the longest time before getting to the point.

Wow! If you liked Midnight, I think you will love this book. But be warned, it starts much slower and is a bit more sutle through and through, and yes, you should read the Aspern Papers first. But then Henry James is a treat, so that isn't a sacrifice, in fact maybe you should read Washington Square while you are at it:)
