Mother Night

by Kurt Vonnegut

Kurt Vonnegut is a master of contemporary American literature. His black humor, satiric voice, and incomparable imagination first captured America’s attention in The Sirens of Titan in 1959 and established him as a “true artist”* with Cat’s Cradle in 1963. He is, as Graham Greene has declared, “one of the best living American writers.”

In my opinion, this is easily Kurt Vonnegut's best book. Hands down, one of my favorites of all time.

You know, for a Vonnegut novel, and for a novel about war, this doesn't seem as wowing as I'd expected. Vonnegut, when he graded all of his novels, gave this novel an A, and yet it's not among his strongest. Perhaps what he had to say was more relevant in the early 60's, but he's not professing any new ideas here, and his voice is decidedly less Vonnegut-like than in his other novels. It's good, but it's not the kind of writing that made him one of the best.

Incisive, and scathing, while funny all at the same time. It is such an amazing way to look at not only the cost of war, but the price the "true" loyalty has. A brilliant book from a brilliant author.

This was actually the first Vonnegut I read and I fell in love!

Very good book I love Vonnegut's cynical humor. First book I've read by him and I'm truly impressed. The ending was a bit predictable, but still very well done.
