Loved it! I am working on the rest of the series and really enjoying all the books. Kind of folklore-fantasy.

I picked up the last two books recently and couldn't get through them. I just can't seem to last through Card's prolonged series. (except Ender's game)

It was interesting but I think it could have been more. The end was too Alfred Hitchcocky to me!!

Alvin Maker = Joseph Smith, Jr. Think about it.

This is just the beginning, an introduction of the main character in the Alvin Maker series. It moves slowly, described even slower. I was bored at many points in this book, moving ahead only to give it a chance. The pace picks up and the story gets more interesting with the appearance of Taleswapper, after about halfway through the book. Maybe the story will get better in later volumes of the series.

This was one of the best books I read in 2008. An alternate history of pre-Civil War era United States in which people inherit magical "knacks," and a seventh son of a seventh son has the remarkable powers of a Maker. Alvin is one such, and this series chronicles his battle against the forces of the Unmaker. In this book, Alvin is only learning of his powers. There is much mystery and magic, and the characters are lovable, so the book is hard to put down. Highly recommended.

Great piece of sci-fi fantasy from one of the true masters of the genre. Card has invented an alternate version of the American frontier in which all the folk magic of legend exists and is a part of everyday life.

You could really see parallels between Joseph Smith and Alvin in this book. I loved that you could see similarities, but it's sooooooo different. Interesting.

As far as I can tell, this book did nothing but set the scene and then beg me to buy another book.

5 STARS. Alternate history, Card weaves a lot of the hocus-pocus, old wives tales sort of magic into the captivating tale of a young boy who is destined to do wonderful and amazing things. But he has enemies, not all of them mortal nor are they powerless. Obviously a set-up for a series, this book left me anxious for the future outcome of the sweet protagonist, Alvin.
