I've heard this series is supposed to be a parable of the mythos behind the Mormon Church. I can sort of see it.

As with most OSC books, about this time the series starts to get a little weird. A lot more philosophy in this one, & less storyline.

An alternate history of pre-Civil War era United States in which people inherit magical "knacks," and a seventh son of a seventh son has the remarkable powers of a Maker. Alvin is one such, and this series chronicles his battle against the forces of the Unmaker. Overall, this is a great and exciting series, though it seems to be weakening slightly in later books. This book in particular was very exciting and hard to put down.

I got about halfway through this book and decided that the series wasn't worth finishing...I liked book one, book two was slightly annoying, and book three just couldn't hold my attention...

This series was very interesting. Orson Scott Card managed to interweave an intriguing version of alternate American history with the possibility of having a tangible awareness of Mother Earth and the physical ability to be in complete sync with Her. Riveting!

Lots of spells, charms, curses, hexes, esp, and moralizing. Like Harry Potter with a message and a smattering of history. I enjoyed it a lot.

Very good continuation of the stories. If you've read the first two books, you've grown with the characters. A few new characters are introduced, and wheras the last book had themes of native-american treatment culture and treatment, this book focuses more on slavery in america. Through all of this, Alvin continues to grow as a Maker as he is a smiths apprentice. Very good read.
