Too Busy Reading to Write

I really enjoyed this novel and the beautiful characterizations in it. Some fans might consider this more fantastical than what Card normally writes. However, this was right up my alley, and I like it better than Enchantment.
I put off reading this book because I couldn't "get into" the...

The trouble with researching an author is that something negative might come up, but I was so surprised with the black voice of the characters that I what to know if Card was African-American. Of course, he isn't; but I found out I am at odds with his religious beliefs so that as I continued reading, I was "finding" overtones, real or imagined, which disturbed my flow. I did love the Midsummer connection. The author's note at the end is very interesting.

A fun book to read. The premise and characters were great but I was a bit disappointed by the ending.

I REALLY liked this book!! It was an odd and very cool story based on Midsummer's Night Dream set in black LA.

Very interesting. Very unique. I've never read anything remotely like this. I think the current day LA backdrop kept me from loving it, but still a very cool book.

Cpauley929 4 out of 5 stars This is the story of Mack Street, a young boy growing up in Baldwin Hills. It's a neighborhood where african-americans who have made careers and lives for themselves go to buy houses and settle down. Mack grows knowing the streets like he knows himself. Raised by the local spinster and his next door neighbor, the boy who found him out in the woods, he learns to be a good person, a good son, and a good friend. Mack knows his neighborhood so well that he dreams their deepest wishes. But soon those wishes start coming true, but in the most horrible of ways. As Mack dreams, he tries to stop the dreams so no more bad happens. He starts to realize that he is not your normal foundling, and that something darker is happening on his streets, and he may have something to do with it.

I really like Card. He's a great storyteller, whether or not I agree with his religious views. This was a very interesting look at Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights Dream. The characters are lovable, and full. The story is tragic yet hopeful. The ending wasn't what I expected, but it was fitting, and happy in it's own way. This is definitely not for people who don't like fantasy. It's not the most believable or seamlessly crafted world, but I loved in nonetheless. It could have something to do with my personal love of fairies. I like that Card addresses religious issues, and I always feel that he gives various sides to the argument, and I can appreciate that. I'm sure your wondering what all these things have to do with each other, but I can't tell you that because it would ruin the story. It's a good book. I loved the characters, and it's a great coming-of-age story.

Not one of Card's best books, but it was still interesting. Filled with magic, it had the impression of being the oddest Card book I've read. But still quite an interesting read.
