The entire Homecoming Saga is a sci-fi rendition of the Book of Mormon plot. I found it fascinating to watch the events unfold and relate them to the scriptural story. The most affecting part of the series, for me, was the retelling of the Alma the Younger story. Card's insight into the struggle he went through while in his long coma had me in tears with sympathy for him. It has expanded my understanding and deepened my appreciation for those who lived these experiences so many years ago.

If you've read the Book of Mormon, you know exactly where this story is going. But OSC provides some added psychological depth to the characters and is, as always, very readable.

Earthfall follows the Children of Wetchik as they embark to a new planet and as the troubles between Wetchik’s sons Nafai and Elemak escalate.

The plot follows the end of the first book of Nephi (in the Book of Mormon), in which Laman (Elemak) ties up Nephi (Nafai) on the journey to America. When they arrive in America, they begin to build their farms, and (in the Homecoming version) meet some creatures left behind by their distant ancestors.

While some parts of the Homecoming series are better than others, its religiously guided plot will probably disappoint most Orson Scott Card fans.

I couldn't even rate this series. Usually I really enjoy Card, but this series seemed to me to be complete hogwash. Here's a MILLIONS OF YEAR OLD society that elects to switch to repressive patriarchy as it's trying to build a tribe? So all of a sudden monogamy is enforced and women suffer death for infractions (but not men), when it's quite clear that you HAVE TO HAVE WOMEN to re-populate anything. Do the math. I collected the series but couldn't get through any of them because of the religiosity.

I really enjoyed the Homecoming series. Like so much of Card's work, you get a sci-fi analogy to religion, but it would be enjoyable even if you didn't look for the religious connections. A recurring theme on his religious/sci-fi works is to try and answer the question of why a benevolent God would allow pain and suffering. While the Worthing book is more directly on this subject, the Homecoming series examines that question as well and also offers a convincing look at what Hell might be like. Hint: Darkness and gnashing of teeth more than lake of fire. Great series. Highly recommend them all!
