This story combines the Ugly Duckling storyline with unrequited love, and love lost and found – some of my favourite themes in romantic fiction – and the whole saga takes place in medieval England.

I was fully immersed in the story from the first page. I loved the restrained yet evocative, heartfelt writing.

The story has a stark feel to it, from the prologue till mid-way into the story. Tristan and Amiranth battle illness, hunger, antagonists and affairs...

My notes were short on this one but strong. I described the heroine as extremely hateful throughout the book and that the hero is emasculated by her treatment.
