I don't know why, but the best part about this version of Mr. Mandela is how his marriage to Winnie was politely dismissed. The second thing is that how understanbly Mr. Mandela's very active life is told on terms children can relate to and understand. It even helped clear up some of my own...

Long Walk to Freedom is an autobiographical work written by Nelson Mandela, and published in 1995 by Little Brown & Co. The text describes his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison. The last chapters of the book describe his political ascension, and his belief that the struggle continues against apartheid in South Africa.

This is the first book I read once I was no longer forced to read books I was not interested in (High School and College). I read about a book a week not so it lit something inside me.

A true inspiration for any political activist. Nelson Mandela is a great man and his drive to stop injustice is humbling. He sacrificed so much for his people and was incredibly sound in his convictions. This book shows the darker side of such a legacy. The time that he devoted to his cause, while admirable, took him away from his family and cost his children their father for almost all of their lives (even prior to his imprisonment). The costs of a freedom fighter should never be taken for granted.
