“one of the better in the new series”

The beginning of each chapter always starts off with great writing and it keeps going from there. It's cool to read books like this where single sentences make you stop and enjoy the emotion and wonder just invoked by solid writing.”

Not only do we see the beginnings of spice harvesting, bene gesserit, personal shields etc but it's a intricate tale in it's own right. It made me think about the rights and wrongs of the people's actions when looking at the bigger picture. Were the slaves really wrong to seek freedom while the human race is as war? How were they any different from the humans seeking freedom from the machines?
And of course we see the ancestors of Baron Harkonnen and Duke Atreides.”
“One of the best books I've ever read! If you've ever read Dune, you have to read this!”

Anderson, who I've read other works from. There's a lot of repetitous exposition. If by chapter 10, you still don't know what happened during the Time of Titans, there's also a slim glossary of characters in the back to explain it even more.
My only gripe about the actual story is that there's nothing new about this novel. Machines are logical, and can't comprehend human behavior. Blah, blah, blah. If Herbert the Elder had written this, he would have definitively come up with interesting views about subjects like slavery that are briefly touched about in the book.
But in the end, I did enjoy reading it and kept reading it to the end. It is a great book for those who wanted to get into Dune but didn't like Herbert the Elder's deep intellectual and philosophical discussions. For those of us who like the depth of the original series, well... ”
“I've always enjoyed the world of Dune. Sometimes it is just what the doctor ordered, a time away from our mundane world, but more than pure escapism. It also is very thought-provoking. Sometimes the perversity and bloodletting are a bit much, however. ”
