If you are interested in Flaubert, this book is for you ! If you know his life and work you will enjoy the puzzle Barnes builds up around them and with them, if you don't, this funny, clever book will provide you with a playful and excellent introduction to one of the best French writers.

I read this a few years ago and remember smiling a few times but I don't look back with fondness. It was just something that I chose at the library...so it looked good enough to try but I finished more out of habit than burning desire. A great book will make you neglect your children and order in dinner. (I only allow myself a book every few weeks because that is what really happens). I think I chose a nap instead of reading it on the train. Just not my type of humor or interest.

If you are interested in Flaubert, or the relationship between reader and writer, this book is for you. Again, I stopped half-way through, something that has been happening more frequently in my life. I just could not get into this book. My reading habits have changed drastically as I've gotten older, and really, not for the better. If the subject matter of a book is too painful and likely to contribute to bad dreams, I stop reading it. If I'm not engaged within two or three chapters, I give it up. This is a big change or me. I used to stick with a book to the end, regardless of initial impressions. Perhaps I've decided subconsciously as I've aged, that life is just too short to spend time on books that don't feel quite right to me. It really has nothing to do with the quality of the writing.

Clearly this was not my "cup-of-tea". I simply got lost in the minutiae. I do not like biography and I hate details like the chronological listing of Flaubert's life and constant reference to dates. Perhaps it would have been easier, as well, if I read French. I disliked it enough, I was unable to pick up on what others found humorous and philosophical.

Witty, funny and a charmer. I fell in love with Barnes and his humor and the way he narrated Flaubert's life. An easy read, really. Barnes humor is addicting. Throughout the period I've read this book, I actually forgot that what I was reading was also a biography and not just some novel. The story revolves around Braithwaithe's search for the stuffed parrot that once inspired Flaubert, his musings not only on Flaubert's life, but on his also.
