by Julian Barnes

This is, in short, a complete, unsettling, and frequently exhilarating vision of the world, starting with the voyage of Noah's ark and ending with a sneak preview of heaven! (read review)

I read this book maybe twenty years ago, yet it strikes me as one of those exercises that everyone ought to go through. There is, as I remember it, a tribunal set up by the Catholic Church to prosecute and condemn the termites who are guilty of having destroyed a chapel and of causing harm to people when it collapsed. Another event, later in the 10 and one half chapters is the pilgrimage of the retired astronaut searching for Noah's ark. Just a fascinating "juxtaposition" of events and periods that recalls how complicated human history and human motivation are.
