An historical mystery involving Dracula. I didn't really see it as a vampire book and that may be why some people didn't like it. Dracula is not sexy or glamourous here- he is a villain. This is not a book for vampire lovers it is a book for book lovers. Who else can appreciate the excitement of finding old and extremely rare books or the incredible caution used to handle a 1,000 year old book? I liked the hunt of finding clues throughout history. I thought the charm of the story was the travel and history descriptions. I loved being able to "see" historical sights in Istanbul and a backwoods Romanian village. How else will I be able to sit in an old village woman's kitchen and watch her make dinner? This is what I liked most about it.

Although it was a bit slow to start out, and at times I almost (though not quite) got lost in the flow of the story, The Historian is a truly thrilling ride, and one I would highly suggest to anyone looking for something new to read!

Despite the fact that this book is about vampires, I can honestly say it's not like any of the other books out there on this subject. Different, unique, and one-of-a-kind are great words to describe this novel. You'll find no romanticized vampires in this novel!

I enjoyed how Elizabeth Kostova managed to tell this captivating story, weaving together not only the story from Paul and Helen's point of view (through letters and some of it though story telling on Paul's part), but also from the point of view of Paul's daughter. While switching from the two POV's may, at first, seem a bit confusing, Kostova did a magnificent job at it, and I can honestly say that there was only one or two spots where I was momentarily confused.

Since the novel was told in such a unique way, and done well, I really felt the connection to not only the story but the characters as well. They were not just words on a page, but honestly seemed like they were real. This was partly due to the lush details provided and partly due to the talent of the author. Not every author can pull this off, but fortunately Kostova did because, to be quiet honest, if she had not managed this, this story would have been drastically different, and a great deal harder to get through without losing interest.

4 STARS! A seamless twist of history and myth, The Historian is a great read for anyone that enjoys a good mystery. Mystery, suspense, a bit of historical accuracy, and even a dash of romance--- really, who wouldn't be interested in reading it? And don't let the vampire plot turn you away, I promise, it's nothing like any vampire story you've read before!

I could not actually finish this. The writing was good, but the story was unbearably slow. I just could not get into it.

This book bounces back and forth between three different, but related, plot lines that actually are not confusing at all. This is such a different vampire book that it is at once fresh and dark. I love the historical search aspect of it as well.

Brilliantly narrated novel about the historical vampire. Very interesting and worth my money :D One of my favorite novel about the vampire legend - Vlad the Impaler. Don't read if you're a tw*l*ght vampire kind, because Vlad would kick Edward's butt.

In this brilliant thriller by Elizabeth Kostova A young girl living with her father sets out for a fabulous, or maybe just daring adventure to find dracula.Through the stories of her father and a picture of a dragon in a mysterious book she must find out what legend really has in store for her. A journey to Istanbull is quite a trip. A long one in fact but the narrator in this novel is brave enough to try to discover what no one has before. Not even her father.Who is one of the most educated and respected people she knows. When their dear friend turns up missing, friends really start to wonder if Vlad Tempes Dracula could really be behind this. Hasn't he been dead for ages? What legend has said he has done to his victims is to horrid and morbid for one to think about happening to a loved one. Could this possibly be worth the risk ? Kostova will keep you on the edge of your chair on this one.
