“You know, I absolutely loved the entire book up until the end. It just seemed to anticlimactic to me. ”
“I really enjoyed it overall, but I found it dragged in parts. I also agree with the posters who felt the ending was weak. ”
“I didn't feel that strongly about it one way or the other. I will say that I was much more excited standing in the store with it in my hand than I was when I started to read it. I enjoyed it more as historical fiction than as gothic horror.”
“Loved it, no question. Could not put it down. Rather than thinking it over-long, the length is part of what I loved. I adore delving into a fun, fat book. In a way, it was what I had wanted from Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (something long and fun and mildly literary but not too serious). But Jonathan Strange's plot didn't really get interesting until the last 200 pages. Whereas I was hooked from the beginning with The Historian. Although in the interests of full disclosure I should say that while I'm not usually a fan of the vampire genre, I am a sucker for a good gothic tale.”
“I agree, it was a beautifully written book, and I enjoyed reading it...but the ending WAS weak and rather anticlimatic...and yes, I think you're right, no resolution would have been more fitting an ending...”
“I agree with an above poster who said that the ending was the weakest point of the book. I mostly enjoyed the intrigue and eerieness of the story...I would almost rather thave never gotten resolution. It would have made it creepier. I also agree that the book was a bit on the long side.”
“I desperately loved it enough to read it twice and then listen to it an audiobook. The ambiance that she created was creepy in a very different sort of way....almost implied. There was one instance where the history lesson was tedious...but I would have to say that it was 95% entertaining and enjoyable.”
“I liked it, but it was painful to read. WAY too much detail and way too long. Could have been about 250 pages shorter and the story wouldn't have suffered at all. I really liked the characters. ”
“I really enjoyed this book up until the end. The historical part was really intriguing, but somehow once Dracula had to be made into flesh, the myth was better than the reality! ”
“I was surprised to find that I liked it. After so many vampire books I thought the subject had been entirely rung dry, but I felt the Historian did have a fresh perspective on this well tread story.”
