What bothers me is that whatever happened to the man who followed Paul's daughter on the train? And who is he?

I read where Kostova won the 2003 Hopwood Award for her Novel-in-Progress and I could see why. Up to the last 100 or so pages I thought it was a fantastic book. I loved how she interweaved history into the story, the multiple points of view, and just how darn spooky it was. Altogether then, I can understand how she deservedly won that award. The book had fantastic promise. Unfortunately, that last 100 pages starts to fade away and then the final battle scene ended way too quick. I can only imagine that either Kosova either got frustrated and gave up, or was pressured to just finish the book. I thought she slightly redeemed herself with a little bit of mystery at the end, but this could have ended much better. Still, I give it a 4/5 because up until the end it was truly fantastic.

This book was more about International history with a small, small, thread weaving in and out of everything that ties it all to a vampiric story. It's title should make it obvious, however I didn't think it would go into EXTREME detail, but it did, every time. After the whole build up of everything, I felt the book ended in a very disappointing and abrupt ending.

I loved this and couldn't put it down. I found it to be well-written and genuinely creepy, with good links between actual history and the legends of vampires. The characters were believable and I cared about what happened to them.

The Historian is one of the best books I have ever read. So much so that, when I finished it I read it from cover to cover again, right away. It is so much more than a book about Dracula. I highly recommend it.

I read this and wasn't quite sure I was going to like it. First it was about vampires and second it was written in the first person. I got 3 pages in and was hooked. I was so impressed by the book that I immediatly had to read 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker and was really disapointed with that book. I found that 'The Historian' found all those inner fears you don't know exist and expolited them fully- I was very scared at some points in the book, I also loved how I could follow the story on a map and see exactly where the characters were. I found the history really interesting and enjoyed this book immensly.

The charcter are so brillant and yet so different and the scarest, is not Vlad Dracula (no he's the most attractive), but the Librarian. I enjoyed this book so much that I have read it four times and am now using it for my A-Level coursework. I strongly reccomend this book where your sense of good and bad gets utterly confused.

I came to this book with resistance. A 700 page book about vampires? Yikes! But a good friend gave it to me and so I started it and couldn't put it down. It is a fascinating book. Wonderfully written and very compelling. I loved the intersection of history and legend. The characters were great! What a great, classy mystery!

I am wondering if anyone out there who has NOT read The Historian would like to read it with me and have a dialog back and forth about what we read. I am not very far, but will wait for you to catch up to me. Please let me know!
