I never thought I'd read an African novel where one of the main African characters is afflicted with anorexia and bulimia. How could this happen in a society where thin is decidedly NOT in, and where a full figure is generally the standard of beauty? I well remember the ideal of the diongoma, for instance, in Senegal, and the riducule directed at the Miss Universe pageant in the local newspapers when it was held at a beach hotel in Cassamance.
