Jamie was born with one testis and one ovary. All it would take to be a boy would be minor surgery and a few years on testosterone. Well, that's what his parents always say. But Jamie sees an elfin princess in the mirror and she fears what male hormones will do to her. To hide from the pain in her father's eyes, the princess withdraws and pretends to be a boy for her family.
At sixteen, the four-foot-eleven soprano leaves a sheltered home school for a boy's dorm at college. The elfin princess can live in the books Jameson reads and nobody has to find out he isn't like other boys. But then a medical student tells Jameson he should have been raised female, setting Jamie on a perilous journey to adulthood.
When the medical student asks to befriend the princess, Jamie agrees to set aside her boy mask for a day. Just one day. But she meets a boy who treats her like a princess, and one day turns into the entire Christmas break. The medical student nudges Jamie toward being a girl full-time. Until Jamie's parents find out and send her to live with relatives to 'get it out of his system.'

“The breeze picked up, rustling the branches and chilling me. The evening was turning cold, but my cares and fears drifted away on the wind. I might not embrace the pain, but I would bear it.”
“As long as I kept my doll, as long as I cherished memories of a girl’s childhood, I’d never be a boy. A wastebasket sat in the closet; it was as simple as leaving her there.”
“Some things I can only do as a girl.”Jamie
Although this book contains no foul language, violence, or explicit sex, it does deal with sensitive issues related to intersex. For instance, there is a non-erotic description of vaginal dilation, something which is often necessary for intersexed children.
