The smell of sweat, stale cigarettes and burnt coffee was like a threadbare blanket, the kind you toss on the end of the sofa and forget, but on a cold evening it suddenly becomes a comforting treasure.

Themes & Symbolism edit see section history

  • Eight eights.: The eight eights appear in the letter from the killer to Emily. Without giving spoilers, the eights are the killer's signature and play a significant role in both his justification and his reasons for murder. The number eight is similar to the symbol for infinity and the Mobius strip: an endless twisting loop. The present circles back to the past. Life is filled with cycles that repeat, even as it moves forward.
  • Sparrow: The sparrow in "Learn To Love Me" is a metaphor for Emily and her fear. Like a sparrow, Emily feels small, plain and insignificant when fear takes over: a wild bird trapped in a cage. The sparrow is represented on the front cover as well, barely visible in the gun smoke.
  • Asterisks: The eight asterisks used to separate the narrative from the flashbacks were used intentionally. Again, without using spoilers, the explanation can be found in Chapter 10 of the book, where Stanley Willems offers a possible explanation for the eight eights in the killer's note.
