This synopsis contains spoilers but the following paragraph does not.

Daniel Vaughn must assist a team of soldiers in tracking down and killing a powerful public enemy. To do this, he must use his knowledge of ancient languages and symbolism. However, it quickly becomes apparent to him and to the team he accompanies that nothing is what it seems.

The story opens with Daniel Vaughn, who answers to "Dr. Thomas" or "Mike," accompanying a small group of soldiers on a long run through the desert. They arrive at a rocky cliff-side and pass through a fissure as the sun is setting.

When the sun finishes setting, the team is trapped in a subterranean cavern adorned with cuneiform-like writing. Daniel is fascinated but the group has to keep moving; he is only there to translate when a choice needs to be made.

They find what looks like a dead end, filled with the strange markings. Daniel identifies and opens a hidden doorway. It contains strange and bizarre creatures that attempt to overpower the group but the group's weapons allow them to wipe out the hostile monsters.

Daniel finds a hidden stairway and the group ascends. They find themselves on a planet with two red suns and unfamiliar vegetation. Some of the team members have difficulty with that but their leader rallies them.

They arrive at a tower. Daniel sends the group in. Daniel's true objective, finding the target and either destroying him or confirming his destruction, is revealed.

Daniel discovers casualties on both sides as he ascends the tower. He finds the hiding place of his, where the remainder of the team lay slain.

His target confronts him and tells him that he was sent into an impossible situation because his handler wanted him to die. Daniel must choose whether he should die doing what is expected or take the another path that will lead to him being ousted from the intelligence community.

The final scene takes place in an apartment where Daniel ambushes his handler.
