- Crispin Hope, Viscount Northword: His intimate friends call him Word. His London home is Northword House. He has an estate in the Exmoor hills called Northword Hill. Since he is never there, some have taken to calling the house "Wordless." Crispin was once in love with his best friend's sister.
- Portia Temple: Was once in love with Crispin Hope, now the Viscount Northword. Her hair has a distinct reddish tinge but she often claims it's brown.
