  • William Laurence: The protagonist, a naval captain who harnesses Temeraire and becomes his handler.
  • Temeraire: A black dragon, born of an egg captured from the French by Capt. William Laurence. Harnessed and handled by Capt. Laurence. Prefers sheep over fish, but will do with either. Often deeply thinks about what Laurence wants.
  • John Granby: Laurence's first lieutenant aboard Temeraire
  • Jane Roland: A female captain of a Longwing dragon, Excidium.
  • Jeremy Rankin: A captain at Loch Laggan. Befriends Laurence when he first arrives.
  • Jean-Paul Choiseul: The captain of Chanson-de-Guerre dragon Praecursoris.
  • Levitas: A Winchester dragon at Loch Laggan. He is always without his captain in the beginning and Laurence takes him under his wing.

After the egg hatches, he names the dragon Temeraire and becomes attached to him. After coming back home, he decides to quit the Navy and go with Temeraire to become a captain for the British Dragon Crops. As his personality, he is selfish and more willing to do what he thinks is right rather than following orders from his superiors. He is the overall main character of the series.
