“I've taught this book to AP seniors for nine years and it is my favorite book ever. Each time I read it I find more in Morrison's language to appreciate. Definitely her best work, but not always the most recognized. The quest of a young black man for independence and self knowledge is mythic, and the novel seamlessly incorporates magic in the story, yet still makes us believe.”
“Breathtaking, definitely a book that you have to revisit at some stage of your life!”
“also my first toni book, it may not be her best, but i will always love it! love the old woman afraid to die with her dogs, loved not doctor street, loved people who could fly, goose bumps when the children sang the song....”
“I didn't fully get this until we covered it in bible study. Then I began to appreciate the beauty of it. I still want to read it again, tho.”
“This is the first of Toni Morrison's novels that I ever read. I have a very vivid memory of greedily wrapping my mind around each and every word. It was love at first turn of the page. I have since read all of her novels, pretty much everything she has ever written, and even told her "I love you so much" (when I was a lot younger and awestruck but clearly not dumbfounded). This book, however, remains my favorite.”
“One of Morrison's most beautifully written poems...great parallels to the biblical book of the Bible.”
