I've taught this book to AP seniors for nine years and it is my favorite book ever. Each time I read it I find more in Morrison's language to appreciate. Definitely her best work, but not always the most recognized. The quest of a young black man for independence and self knowledge is mythic, and the novel seamlessly incorporates magic in the story, yet still makes us believe.

I didn't fully get this until we covered it in bible study. Then I began to appreciate the beauty of it. I still want to read it again, tho.

This is the first of Toni Morrison's novels that I ever read. I have a very vivid memory of greedily wrapping my mind around each and every word. It was love at first turn of the page. I have since read all of her novels, pretty much everything she has ever written, and even told her "I love you so much" (when I was a lot younger and awestruck but clearly not dumbfounded). This book, however, remains my favorite.

One of Morrison's most beautifully written poems...great parallels to the biblical book of the Bible.
