  • mrs pargeter: Widow of Mr. Pargeter who earned his magnificent living in somewhat dubious means but was a paragon of virtue. Mrs. Pargeter carries on her late husband's tradition.
  • Veronica Chastaigne: Terminally ill widow of one of Mr. Pargeter's colleagues in crime. She calls on Mrs. Pargeter for help with a very unusual task. Veronica lives in the mansion called Chastaigne Varleigh that her late husband provided for her to keep her in the style of living that she had grown up in. However, there have always been romours that this mansion is filled with stolen goods which causes a one Detective Inspector Craig Wilkinson, who ineptly investigated Mr. Pargeter to the grave, to continue his investigations.
  • Detective Inspector Craig Wilkinson: A 50's something Detective Inspector not far from retirement who pursues his investigations of criminals he has been pursuing for years but who have always managed to slip from his hands. His bumbling antics completely frustrate his new and young associate, Detective Sergeant Hughes.
  • Detective Sergeant Hughes: Abandoning his former life and girlfriend of four years in Sheffield to take the promotion to Detective Sergeant in London, Hughes is the new, young and eager associate of Detective Inspector Wilkinson. Far less dense than his older fellow Inspector, Detective Sergeant Hughes finds himself kept totally on the sidelines of the investigation by Detective Inspector Wilkinson. He can't help but be bored and exasperated by Wilkinson's ineptitude and sonorous platitudes about how to be a "good copper" or run an investigation.
