Written immediately after “The Sound and the Fury,” he continues to explore the possibilities of the stream of consciousness narrative, and here the effect is much more straightforward. Again, the act of reading the novel becomes hallucinatory, visionary...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It1 of 1 members found this review helpful“We were assigned to read this book in high school, but I didn't like it so I only read a few chapters. I decided to read it in my adulthood to see if I'd misjudged it--I didn't. The only part I found enjoyable was the last page, and that was mainly because it was finally OVER.” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I was actually not too much of a fan of this book. Maybe it's over my head, but I just didn't seem to get it. It was hard to keep track of who was who. I'm glad I didn't have to read this one in school, because I'm fairly certain that I would have failed that class. I don't like rating this that I don't like it, because I don't understand it. Which is completely different. Which is why I'm not rating it. ”

I don't know about that, but he is definitely one that requires you to pay attention while you read. I was cruising along and the next thing I knew naked people were running around with animals, the barn was burning, and then two of the naked guys started wrestling. huh? definitely not easy reading but a nice change of pace from the type of writing that is prevalent in most of todays books. ”

I wish I could have the time from my life spent reading this book back. Slow story, lame characters, message...? This dumb family's mother dies, so they take her rotting body in a box traveling like 9 days or something to go bury her where she wanted to be buried. Sounds exciting huh!? As I lay dying made me feel like I was dying while reading this book. How this book was published and has stuck around for a long time is a mystery to me. I am hesitant to read another Faulkner book, but I will. Hope for the best. Like I did this entire book hoping that it would get better. Maybe my taste in literature is bad.”
