by Rudyard Kipling

Kipling, a Nobel laureate, has a tarnished reputation as a jingoist, and this is a splendid example of how that came about. This is a wonderful tale of two ne'er-do-well British soldiers who move to Afghanistan to make their fortunes. Daniel holds the line of imperialism firmly in his grip, whereas Peachy is not so sure. Funny and harrowing. Be sure to check out the very fine film adaptation with Sean Connery and Michael Caine.
