Yes | No“From "Books That Build Character," When Irene sees that her mother is too sick to deliver the dress she has made for the duchess, she volunteers to go to the palace herself. But when she ventures into the howling wind, Irene realizes that this may not be such an easy task after all. And when the dress is torn from her grasp by the wind and she flounders in a deep snowdrift, Irene is tempted to give up. The only thing that keeps her going is the thought of her mother's and the duchess's disappointment if she fails. Whimsically written in the tradition of the fairy tale, "Brave Irene" is the story of a little girl's love for her mother and how this gives her the courage to persevere despite almost insurmountable odds.
What a lovely book! The boys almost held their breath as Irene trudged through the snow, clinging to the box and fighting the wind. They suffered aloud as the dress was lost to the wind. They were compelled by her character and her tenacity. They cheered when she found the dress and was treated so nicely by the Duchess and others at her home. They truly bonded with Irene from Page One. Great read.”
“Adorable book is a modern classic- meaning I didn't read it when I was a kid but it's held in high regard.
Adorably illustrated in mild colours with a vibrant old-fashioned style, the pictures compliment the story perfectly, which I've found is unusually with most children's picture books.
The story is of Irene a dressmaker's daughter that must deliver a dress to the duchess by herself through a blizzard due to her mother's sudden illness.
Fantastically courageous Irene is a positive female character without being overly melodramatic.”
