- Josephine Moraine: The protagonist of the book who has been making martinis since age 7 and keeping her own apartment since age 11. At 17, she's trying to shake off the reputation of her prostitute mother and suspicions of a murder case, to achieve her dream, which is to attend Smith College and get out of New Orleans.
- Willie Woodley: A tough, no-nonsense New Orleans madam, who is more of a mother to Jo than the one who gave birth to her.
- Louise Moraine: Jo's good-for-nothing mother, who is a prostitute.
- Jesse Thierry: The handsome boy with a motorcycle who tries to convince Jo how much she actually likes him. He sells flowers for a living.
- Charlie Marlowe: Author and owner of the bookstore where Jo works. He is the kind man who allowed Jo to take up residence in an apartment over the shop.
