This book was similar to These Is My Words, another favorite written in diary form from the perspective of a pioneer woman settling in the West. I loved Mattie and was very affected by what happened to her and her neighbors during the several years the diary covers. There is so much hardship, and a lot of the content is very sad and/or distressing. But it's enlightening to read about this time and way of life. I was extremely grateful for my blessings when I finished and to those who have gone before and made the way relatively easy for me.

I love Sandra Dallas's writing! She has a way of making her characters speak straight to the reader. Mattie Spenser is a young Iowa farm girl who marries Luke Spenser and moves via wagon train to Colorado Territory shortly after the end of the Civil War. She encounters hardships, loneliness and violence, and finds an unexpected love. Her grit, perseverence and integrity endear her to all - even, eventually, her husband. Great writing. Great story.

First time reading anything by Mattie Spenser. Oh yah! Just my cup of latte -- historical fiction written in a diary format. Written so beautifully that if you're not careful you keep thinking it's a 'real' diary. Obviously lots of research went into it and I've already picked out another by Sandra to take a look at too.

Wonderful read! Trials and tribulations of a young pioneer bride are journaled as she is making her "prairie home" on the eastern plains of CO in the 1860's. It takes place just after the civil war, so yankees and southerners must learn to live together harmoniously in order to concentrate their efforts on surviving the rugged plains occupied by varying tribes of Native Americans who are less than hospitable. I am thankful to women like Mattie Spenser as I enjoy our farm on the eastern plains of CO in the year 2009. I found this so very interesting knowing a bit of the history of the 1884 homesteaders who built my beautiful home.

So far this book is good I've not even made a single dent but, it's very good. But the font is quiet smalll and each page is packed with at least 50 words a page.
