“For those of you who read Gayle Forman’s If I Stay duology then you know how life-changing her books are. Just One Day is no different. This book alters my perspective on understanding life and it helps me to understand myself a little better.
I can easily relate to our main character, Allyson, for many reasons: being shy and afraid of doing something spontaneous being the two main ones. I would never have done what Allyson did but if in some reality, I did then the results might be similar to Allyson’s journey. I thought that the first part of the book was cheesy but I knew in the back of my mind that something big was going to happen that would change Allyson’s life. And man, it was brutal. Her hysterical reaction when she couldn’t find Willem was absolutely heart-breaking. If my parents were like Allyson’s parents, I would go crazy. I loved the fact that they did not resolve their strained relationship right away but slowly, step-by-step. Allyson’s journey to discover herself and who she really is was one hell of a journey. The people she met during that journey were all amazing and they all contributed to the overall story. Willem, the person who started it all, was a delicious enigma. My feelings for him are very confusing because I love and hate him at the same time. Through Forman’s writing, I was with Allyson every step of the way whether in Paris, London, Amsterdam or in Utrecht, Holland. I just love Gayle Forman’s writing.
This is not a very long review because I can’t find the right words to describe how this book affected me. I highly recommend this book to everyone and I cannot wait to read Just One Year (from Willem’s perspective!!!!)
