  • Valerie Anthrope: Valerie's life changed drastically when her baby brother died and her mother, already neurotic, became fixated on Valerie's health. Her mother committed suicide when Valerie was sixteen, and her father, on finding the body, died a week later after a series of heart attacks. Valerie summed it up in two words: love kills.
  • Alex (Lex) Kendal: Lex is a playboy. His motto is: live hard, play fast. And he certainly goes through women fast. He pursues Valerie until she, inadvertently, turns the tables and HE falls for HER. She lets him down gently: 'You’re just a stupid little man but you…’ she turned back to Ellen. ‘I actually classed you as a friend.’
  • Ellen Semple: She's the busy body from hell, except she really does want to help.
