Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life

At age 10, Steve Martin got a job selling guidebooks at the newly opened Disneyland. In the decade that followed, he worked in Disney's magic shop, print shop, and theater, and developed his own magic/comedy act. By age 20, studying poetry and philosophy on the side, he was performing a dozen times a week, most often at the Disney rival, Knott's Berry Farm. Obsession is a substitute for talent, he has said, and Steve Martin's focus and daring--his sheer tenacity--are truly stunning. He writes about making the very tough decision to sacrifice everything not original in his act, and about lucking into a job writing for The Smothers Brothers Show. He writes about mentors, girlfriends, his complex relationship with his parents and sister, and about some of his great peers in comedy--Dan Ackroyd, Lorne Michaels, Carl Reiner, Johnny Carson. He writes about fear, anxiety and loneliness. And he writes about how he figured out what worked on stage.

Basboy, I had a similar response.

I would have liked a lot more info about the Saturday Night live years, for instance.

I thought the best parts of the book were his early years, which I found fascinating, and the jokes sprinkled throughout, which were pretty funny.

But he definitely held back a lot. It was like half a life.

I didn't finish reading it. I listened to the audiobook, but found it incredibly dry. I should note that I usually do not read biographies or autobiographies.

Loved this book. If you like Steve Martin, you will enjoy the insight into where his unique style of comedy came from. He comes across as a "real" person.

Skellybean, we own a couple of his vinyl records, too. We saw Steve Martin do his stand-up act in Dallas back in the 70's. I have been a fan of his for many, many years and enjoyed this well written memoir very much.

I own Steve Martin records. Vinyl records! I used to listen to them endlessly in junior high and can still recite certain bits from memory. Steve Martin was the lovable jerk who made me laugh through my teen years and beyond, but I had no idea that he was freaking brilliant until I started reading his written works. The man definitely knows how to compose a sentence. I wonder if he works as hard at writing as he did on his comedy act, or if it just comes naturally. Either way, he writes beautifully and I’m always happy when he publishes something new.

This is the greatest book on comedy I've ever read. Wonderful!

By the way, if this book does not quench your thirst for everything Steve Martin... don't repeat my mistake and buy the older biography called "Steve Martin" written by a high school friend of his. I fell sucker to this really bad bio years ago and I'm still a little pissed about it. I'm guessing Steve gave an old friend a break and through him a bone.
