50 Book Challenge! 3084 books / 3105 members / 18077 posts When asked about the new Amazon Kindle product, Steve Jobs CEO of Apple computer had this to say:

“It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore,” he said. “Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

Welcome to the the 50 Book Challenge, where we fly in the face of Steve Jobs.

Basically .... the challenge is to read 50 books in one year. OR ... establish a goal for yourself more or less, it's up to you, just because we say 50 books doesn't mean that has to be your goal too.

Start a thread, WITH YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT OF YOUR ORIGINAL POST, and log your books. It is a very good idea to bookmark (when in your post, add it to your internet browser's favorites) your post for easy location for future updates. Things move quickly around here.

If you haven't been keeping track of the books you've read, start when you join.

Thanks for being here and have fun. If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to contact me.

The Rory Gilmore Book Club 112 books / 268 members / 563 posts "Behold, the thing that reads a lot!"
~Lorelai Gilmore

This group contains books read by all the characters of the show, mainly Rory, Lorelai, Richard, Paris, and Jess. As soon as Shelfari lets me tag group books, I'll have them all sorted out.

The group is for the Gilmore Girls enthusiast, those of us who not only watch the show for the crazy Gilmore Gossip, but who also watch and wonder just what the heck Rory is reading next.

~How we work~
We'll be reading a book a season:
Winter: December, January, February, March
Spring: April, May
Summer: June, July, August, September
Fall: October November

Winter & Summer will be reserved for reading the larger novels Rory has on her shelf, so that reading is not overwhelming and remains fun!

Please feel free to revive old discussions. Just because the season's over, doesn't mean we still can't read and discuss!

*Special Thanks to lifer_refil - whose maniacal obsession with Gilmore Girls helped to bulk up this shelf! =)

Thanks.

Merocksyeah's Favorite Books Group 5 books / 6 members / 16 posts Talk about your favorite books, least favorite books.... just talk about books!!
Ozappa! Books for ESL Learners 32 books / 38 members / 59 posts Reading is a great way to improve your English. It doesn't have to be hard work either. Choose a book that looks interesting and not too hard to read. You should be looking for a book that has 2-5 words per page that are unfamiliar. Dictionary use is discouraged. Only use it when you are really stumped and/or really want to know the meaning.

I am basing my selection on what has worked for my own kids (growing up in a bilingual environment) and also on the experience of my students in Tokyo who are coming to English from a wildly different language.

When you've finished a book, let us know what you thought of your experience. Do not worry about mistakes!!!!!! We just want to hear your ideas.

NNBR - Not Necessarily Book Related 91 books / 551 members / 13801 posts Oh, come on! we need a place to just chat here, whether or not it's about books.

Religion, politics, recipes, games, restaurant reviews, dinner ideas, WWYD questions, tech recommendations, and whatever else you can think of or want to discuss.

Bitching and moaning are allowed. Bullying, trolling and scams are not.. This forum is not an appropriate place for authors to promote their books (but we'd LOVE to chat with you!) The management thanks you in advance for your cooperation.

A Note about Deleting Posts:
I don't generally delete threads, mostly because I'm pretty much against censorship (unless it becomes a mean, knock down drag out, name calling fight) but also because I believe that it is important to know where the idiots are, so to speak. If I deleted every obnoxious post, new folks would join the group and have no idea that that Person X had a habit of spouting all this nonsense. I think that if you're going to act like an idiot, your stuff should be left up so that everyone can see you for what you are. Forewarned is forearmed, IMO.

Chai Readers 3 books / 1 members / 0 posts We are a group of Middle School readers. Our reading selections reflect the Genre of the Month, as we are introduced to fiction and non-fiction that would not normally be our first choice for curling up with a good book. This year, we are exploring mystery/suspense, westerns, satire, non-fiction/science, autobiography/biography, action/adventure, and poetry. Our favorite Genre of the Month, though, is Reader's Choice - the last category of the year. By then, our idea of a favorite book may change...
