Poison, the main character of the book and a headstrong young woman, has alway wanted to escape the marshes in which she was born. When her little sister Azalea is kidnapped by the evil Scarecrow, she has the reason she needs to leave. She travels into the infamous phaerie realm, where she encounters evil creatures, including the king of Phaerie, the Lady Asinastra, and the great Heirophant. Will she find her sister, or will her tale involve a greater role?

  • Poison: A willful, stubborn girl. She doesn't quite accept her life as it has been dealt to her, and when her little sister is spirited away by phaeries, she sees it as a perfect chance to save her sister and escape from her dreary, depressing life.
  • Azalea: Poison's baby sister that is taken by Phaeries, a changeling in her place.
  • Hew: Poison's dad; he doesn't really understand her, and tries to ignore it when her and Snapdragon fight.
  • Faraway: Poison's mom; she died before the book even began.
  • Snapdragon: Poison's stepmom. They don't get along well, and the fight whenever they can. Snapdragon tries to be civil when Hew is around, because she loves him.
  • Fleet: Adventurous man, poison's neighbor. She goes to him for advice when Azalea is taken, because he knows more than anyone else in town about the land beyond Gull (the town where they live).
