Haee and the other middlings are fictional characters created by R.S.Vern. Each character takes on very human traits, carrying dreams and hopes of everyday working man. Just as ordinary human beings, the characters portrayed are never perfect, displaying insecurities and imperfections in their own ways.

However imperfect life can be, the characters find ways to compensate for their own insecurities. The main character Haee, is borne with a crooked tail. Unafraid of venturing into unfamiliar territories, he is a free wandering spirit who constantly feeds on fresh experiences. Whie is an outcast due to her physical imperfection. Desperate to make sense of her own existence, she is determined to do something different and therefore, sets out to save the world. Tom Stuck has strange hands and earns a decent living as an accountant. Yet he secretly wishes he could be a farmer. Jane Fruss hates rules and regulations yet derives comfort living with certainties at home.

Through the world of middlings, R.S.Vern creates a series of 3 graphic novels targeting at children and adults. Children see it as a quirky picture book, adventuring the world through the eyes of a cat. Adults see common traits of themselves in these fictional characters.

R.S.Vern aims to throw thought provoking concepts on life to her readers. At the end of it, she believes it is not the end that matters, but the journey itself.

Glossary edit see section history

  • middlings: Middlings commonly have a comfortable standard of living, considerable economic security, moderate work + life autonomy and often rely on their own expertise to sustain themselves. They place great emphasis on independence, value innovation, respect the non-conformist and have great concerns for the environment. They appear established and well rounded but often have insecurities locked within. Middlings live among others but essentially feel apart from it all. They often ask themselves this: “Are we not as happy as those who are much better off in this world?”

Reading Level: Ages 9-12

  • Notes from Cat Haee: Notes from Haee share an interesting insight on the life of a solitary, restless and irritable middling. As a cat living in the city, Haee is left alone most of the time in the pad he shares with Tom and Jane (2 working middlings). He spends his day either staring out into the streets below or sitting in front of his favourite 25-inch television box.He avoids social contact most of the time but at times, when he feels drawn to people, he sneaks out into the feverish, crowded streets below. Occasionally in the night, he trawls the bars, indulges in loud music, cigarettes and alcohol. These notes provide an insight to an atmosphere of neglect, self-neglect, boredom, and non-existentialism, even sordidness. It is somewhat the modern city we live in.Subscribe to Haee’s notes in his facebook notes at https://www.facebook.com/Cat.Haee?sk=notes.
