It is John Egbert's thirteenth birthday. But the one thing he wants is the new video game, Sburb. When it arrives in the mail, he begins to play it with his friend Rose Lalonde. They discover that Sburb allows the player to manipulate their surroundings. After messing around a bit with in-game gadgets and gizmos like the Totem Lathe and Alchemiter, an ominous countdown appears on the Cruxtruder. As meteors begin falling from the sky, John and Rose call on their other two friends, a cool kid and a mysterious as-yet nameless girl who apparently sees the future, to help them out with their own copies of the game. But nothing can stop the meteors, and one of them hits John's house.
Years in the future (but not many), a wayward vagabond wanders a vast, lifeless desert. He finds a huge, strange white object almost completely buried under the sand, with a Sburb spirograph on top. The curtains close on Act 1.

  • John Egbert: Thirteen years old; his birthday is April 13. Likes really terrible movies, programming computers (though he isn't very good at it), paranormal lore, magic tricks and video games.
  • Rose Lalonde: Likes rather obscure literature, creative writing, the zoologically dubious, psychoanalysis, knitting and video games, if the right one strikes her fancy.
