200 years ago, the Brothers Grimm unleashed their stories upon the world.

Literally.

Now the characters of the Grimms’ stories walk among us. With every day that passes, they grow more evil. They are the Corrupted, and only a hero can save them.

For 18-year-old Alice Goodenough, that means taking precious time off from her summer vacation. In addition to volunteering at the local library, Alice must stop the Corrupted who are now actively hunting her down. With the help of her magic pen and her trusty rabbit friend, the world has suddenly gotten a lot more complex. The Corrupted are everywhere, and only Alice can see them for what they truly are.

Meanwhile, at night, Alice’s nightmares have begun to grow more real. Terrifying man-eating rats are plaguing the city of Chicago, and it’s up to Alice to figure out a way to stop them. But before she can do that, she’ll have to face off with an even more dangerous enemy sent to kill her.

An enemy that has killed heroes before …

Characters/People edit see section history

  • Cinderella: 200 years have taken their toll on poor Aschenputtel, who now spends her days toiling in meaningless work and her nights searching for someone to live happily ever after with. She also has a terrible secret, one that may mean the end of a certain hero.
  • The Frog-Prince: Once a frog, then a handsome prince, now after 200 years the Corruption has mutated him back into a terrifying hybrid. Not quite human, not quite frog, the Frog-Prince has a new master who pays him to spy on the hero.
  • Fundevogel: Fundevogel and his sister have always had the ability to shapeshift. Once their story was finished, the two began to turn evil almost immediately. The siblings are cocky, and for good reason: they've killed heroes before.
  • Alice Goodenough: The newest hero. Alice is about to start her senior year of high school, and all she can think about is what Corrupted will appear next. No time for boys, no time for reading ... Alice's life is quickly becoming consumed with the responsibilities of the hero. With the help of her rabbit friend and her magic fountain pen, Alice must find a way to fix the mistake made by the Brothers Grimm.
  • Br'er Rabbit: Always dependable, Br'er Rabbit--Briar for short--helps the heroes in their quest to destroy the Corrupted. With a quick wit and a noggin full of knowledge, he can always be expected to lend a hand. But that doesn't mean his fear of the Corrupted won't cause trouble from time to time.
  • Sam Grayle: One of the original seven dwarfs, Sam has become corrupted by greed, and it controls his every action. While he hasn't yet reached the point where he'll kill, it may be that the only thing holding him back is the knowledge that if he behaves slightly better than other Corrupted, the hero might pass him by.
  • Flick Grayle: Another surviving dwarf, Flick is consumed with a murderous anger, and has no problem going after the hero. Why not? He's faced worse.

Glossary edit see section history

  • Corrupted: After the Brothers Grimm used magic to make all of their stories come to life, there was a problem: what would happen to the characters after their stories were over? The answer: they turned evil. Some, like the Big Bad Wolf, turned evil quickly. Others turned evil more slowly. But it was clear the magic used by the Brothers Grimm had been of the blackest kind, and the Corruption would eventually overtake every character--no matter how good they may have been in their story.
