“Read this for sure but not quite sure if I made it to the end. Will look for this book and give it another pass.”

Modern literature has nothing on this book (although it might have spared us the moral-of-the-story type ending). It's a page-turner and you develop quite a weakness for the characters. I was not entirely happy with the rhythm, which, in my opinion, could have been faster towards the middle and slower at the end, where things seem to get tied up a little too quickly to be satisfying. Still, this book is a classic with good reason and it hasn't lost any of its bite with age.”

French aristocrats play fast and loose with other peoples lives. I could go all Higher Thought and point out the subversive moralism of de Laclos, but you won't notice anything but fun in your first two readings. If you've seen the movie, read the book. if you've read the book, see the movie.”

“Scandal and intrigue pull the reader into a world so lusty and self-serving, yet somehow so mesmerizing. The epistolary form is never boring in this. There are such opposites to conflict the soul: purity and baseness, honesty and deception, innocence and experience to captivate especially those with a penchant for the French writers.”

Told in the form of letters, we learn of a few terribly naughty French aristocrats and their affairs. This small ensemble use words, emotion and guile to entertain and relieve themselves of their ennui without shame. The use of beautiful prose makes the wicked sentiment expressed even more pronounced. Makes modern day drama seem quite tame by comparison!”

(It's a cult classic, for those of you who are under 30 :-) The movie was awesome (Michelle Pfieffer, John Malcovich, Keanu Reeves, Glenn Close), but the book is even better. The scheming, the calculation, the witty repartee. . . AWESOME! :-)”
