Despite the, uhm, 'striking' cover art, Carey's trilogy had considerably more depth and subtlety that I expected, without being any less of the engaging summer-beach read I had hoped for. (OK, maybe the beach at midnight . . . ) Less like Laurell K. Hamilton, more like Alexandre Dumas with a good editor.

Ms. Carey continues in the Kushiel series, with this third book. Another absolutely amazing read and 5 stars!

I feel like I have been reading this for ages. I must have started over a year ago! Truth be told, it was quite slow in the beginning and this is what accounted for my not being able to continue. The second time around, I sped through the beginning and realized that it gets so much more exciting after that! I loved the Darsanga scenes. Once you get over the speed bump, the plot of this book is actually much better than that its predecessors. Glad I finished this, though not sure I'm up to tackling the Imriel series just yet.

A really sound and satisfying end to this trilogy, and with the added benefit of setting up the following one.
Dangling plot string are tied off neatly - except for the couple that are left open for the following books. :) Highly recommend this trilogy as a whole.

Note: this is a fantasy with sparse fantasy elements, rather than overwhelming ones. The semi-historical places are recognizable as the equivalents of real-world ones and it keeps the reader moving to the end of the story.

    Give it a shot!

A worthy conclusion for Carey's first "Kushiel" trilogy, featuring a more mature Phédre no Delaunay. I enjoyed it just as much as its predecessors.
