Kushiel's Dart (Kushiel's Legacy)

by Jacqueline Carey

The land of Terre d'Ange is a place of unsurpassing beauty and grace. It is said that angels found the land and saw it was good...and the ensuing race that rose from the seed of angels and men live by one simple rule: Love as thou wilt.

Phèdre nó Delaunay is a young woman who was born with a scarlet mote in her left eye. Sold into indentured servitude as a child, her bond is... (read more)

A fabulous action/intrigue/fantasy/romance/"yes" novel. I love Carey's message about love in all its forms... it isn't as simple as you'd think.

This first novel in the Kushiel saga is by far the best, and fortunately also works as a stand alone book.

It's a wonderful, enjoyable novel that mixes intrigue, good characters, thorough worldbuilding and a (by fantasy measures) non-standard approach to love and sex. The main precept of the dominating religion is "Love as thou wilt", which the characters proceed to do. The main character is, in fact, a likable spy--who also happens to be a masochistic courtesan.

The internal conflict is great, and I would say that the mix of internal/external conflict is what makes this novels stand head and shoulders above its sequels.

I came across this book by accident at the Goodwill for $1! What a read. Really crazy and dramatic and I was hooked. Totally different from anything I have read...and it is part of a series! A must read!

It took me a little while to get into this book, but once I did I was in love! Phedra is an amazing character to follow and the supporting cast is rich and vibrant as well. I think the main thing I had a hard time with was grasping all the political intrigue, but once I got it all I was enthralled. The erotic parts of the book were very tastefully done and not too over the top. It's an amazing work that is much lighter on the mythical creatures and magics than most others in the fantasy genre, but it keeps me interested and waiting for something spectacular to happen. Once I finished this I couldn't wait for the second and I'm currently just starting the third in the series. Give it a chance and you won't be disappointed.

I may change my mind a some point, but I've tried to read this twice now and just can't get past chapter one.

This was a different take on fantasy genre. Rather than the typical magic and mythical creatures, this book created a whole new world with societal beliefs and customs, while still creating a great story. This was a page turner for me and I highly recommend the other books in this series as well.

Definitely not for me. It was well written- a good story, compelling character development. But this book was just not made for me. I didn't like the subject matter (it disturbed me) and nothing ever went anywhere with the love interests of the story. All in all I was disappointed and rather chagrined with this book. I will not be reading the others in the series.

Maybe I'm just closed minded... but I just did not enjoy it at all.

How to describe this book and why I love it? Its part love story, part sensual erotica, full of betrayal and adventure, of characters you adore and villains you might root for. Mix in a heaping dose of political and courtly intrigue and you have a wonderful intricate novel that has such a rich and full history and mythos you can’t help but fall into it. The lead character is flawed and real, just as the supporting cast. Nothing is ever strictly black and white, but shades of grey and I love that. Of course the novel has its flaws. Sometimes the narrative can be a bit over the top, but as you get into it you don’t notice it anymore. And it is a long book, certainly not a read in one sitting beach read. But it is a delight and it only gets better. Worth picking up and trying.

I read this book a couple of years ago on the recommendation of Travis (book pusher and later co-worker of Mark's) and enjoyed it but didn't think more upon it. Then the author came to town to sign her latest work in the series at our bookstore so I took the opportunity to go buy the rest of the series so far and get them signed. I remember truly enjoying the first book but with everything else on my shelves, it got pushed back...Until now. I just got finished reading this one for the second time and Wow! I was still blown away by it. The characters are wonderfully written, the plot and political intrigue are superb, and the pace takes your breath away by the end. I couldn't put it down for the last 200 pages or so as I so enjoyed getting lost in that world. I would follow the story of Delaunay's anguisette, Kushiel's Dart, on the journey the god's have put her on any day. I wouldn't want to walk it with her tho.
