Fantasy and Sci-fi Fanatics 1026 books / 1166 members / 1163 posts I am personally addicted to fantasy and sci-fi and I created this group for people to discuss Fantasy and Sci-fi books that they have read.

I have found myself, more often than not, searching for a really good fantasy or sci-fi book, but to no avail. Starting a group not only enables me, and you, to find great books, but it also is a great way to discuss likes and dislikes about these books.

Just a warning, I will also put realistic-fiction books on the group shelf if I feel that they are as good as a fantasy or sci-fi book. MEOW!!!!!

***NOTICE***
If you are a member, or just a random person, please put any sci-fi or fantasy book that you *LOVE* on the group shelf, please!

Another thing, plez post discussions or reply to one, i'd love to hear your opinions.

We meet at the Salt Lake City main library on the first Sunday of each month at 2 pm to talk about the last book we read, and pick another book for the next month. We have a website/blog at http://overdriveslc.blogspot.com/
White Rabbit Books 23 books / 2 members / 0 posts Sometimes just picking up a book, opening it, and reading the first paragraph will send me off after it and down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. These are the books that result in all-nighters, missed bus/train stops and frustrated lovers.

Mark you, not all of my favorite books are White Rabbits. Some take at least 100 pages to hook me into an alternate reality. Some few, however, grabbed me from page 1 and didn't release me until the Author Blurb on the jacket.

I'm wondering if other avid readers have similar experiences. I guess some experience this literary dislocation more often than I, and some others always have to be courted and coaxed into a new world. Perhaps the phenomenon is recognizable, however, and I for one enjoy the sensation so much that I'd like to learn what books led others outside of our world into a new space.

I'm also interested in looking at different aspects of the White Rabbit. Does the seductiveness lie in the book itself, in the circomstances of the Reader, combinations of both, and so on..

I hope my reading colleagues are as fascinated by this type of reading experience as I am and will chime in.

Respectfully,
Sonja B

Guilty (Reading) Pleasures 39 books / 100 members / 306 posts Before I joined Shelfari, I used to think that I was a book snob. I've come to find that I'm very clearly NOT and decided to embrace my inner fluffy and/or trashy book lover (and to be honest, I really don't feel that guilty about it!) Reading doesn't always have to be an intellectual pursuit; sometimes it's just fun!

So, c'mon...you know that you have a book stashed somewhere that you're ashamed to let anyone know you love. Or maybe it's an entire genre of books that no one knows you crave to read. Or maybe it's just that you love to read celebrity trash magazines in your spare time. Whatever it is, feel free to come in here and let your burden off your shoulders. We won't laugh...really.
