“Great book, I liked everything about this story, powerful confident hero and heroine, development of romance, humor, fast paced action and finding balance between career and personal life. Federal attorney Cade approaches general attorney Brooke to help him catch a corrupt politician.
Julie James is an excellent storyteller. I love it when authors let their characters be smart and not have to invent an implausible situation to keep them together or pull them apart. Brooke Parker is a corporate attorney for a small but growing restaurant enterprise who is constantly working. She loves her job and all it involves. Here comes Cade Morgan, Assistant US Attorney, who needs her help with some illegal activity set to take place in one of her boss’s restaurants. The two trade mild barbs and eventually arrange to meet over drinks to discuss other restaurant business.
Both characters can’t keep a relationship for more than a few months because she is too busy and he doesn’t let the other person in. Their attraction to each other leads to a casual/sexual relationship, which quickly becomes more. I liked their teasing of each other. It was funny and intimate and made me really like the characters.
There are some outside influences, like Brooke’s job and Cade’s family, but that only enhances their relationship and turns it into something more than casual. When does your job become your life vs. a part of your life? Can you let go of your past hurt and anger to forgive and begin a new relationship? The ending did not seem forced, giving each one time and valid reasons to come to the decisions they made.
There are a few recurring characters involved, but nothing that would stop a first time reader from enjoying the book. If you are looking for a good contemporary romance, look no further than Love, Irresistibly.
“Better than the last book but does not live up to the standards set by the first.
Once again, the plot is completely devoid of tension and suspense even though there is definite potential for some exciting story lines (corrupt politicians, a disgruntled employee). Fans of contemporary romance probably won't notice the deficiency but for me, the action was noticeably absent, especially given the fact that the series is entitled FBI/US Attorney.
Brooke and Cade are carbon copies of their counterparts in previous installments. That said, Cade's issues with his father and Brooke's feelings of inferiority resulting from her background do add some emotional depth to their characters, which was missing in About That Night. Their romance is sweet and thankfully avoids the pitfalls of silly misunderstandings but the chemistry is only so-so and the banter wasn't as humorous or witty as in the other books.
Contemporary romance is not one of my preferred genres although there are a few gems out there. While this one is alright it is not one of those rare gems - simply too boring and uninspired. ”
“This gets a 4.5 star for me. I really enjoyed reading this book- it got me out of a reading slump where a number of books I have started reading can't seem to hold my interest. Well that is not a problem with this book since the two lawyers- Brooke and Cade were both so sexy, smart and interesting that I just had to read the book in one sitting. Brooke and Cade have high profile and busy careers that they kept being dumped in their relationships. When they came together as a couple they both wanted to keep the relationship casual. But they came together at a time when Brooke started wanting to have some balance in her life and Cade had to deal with a newly found half-brother and his father who had abandoned him. I like Brooke and Cade together but beyond the smart quips they have problems opening their feelings. As a reader I was hoping for more emotional scenes and angst since these two are just so logical and rational, as lawyers are wont to do, even at the last chapter. The secondary characters are scene stealers as well. So at times my attention was more into Ford, Brooke's best friend, and Cade's FBI buddies and his cute brother who is in the throes of his first crush. I really liked reading about what US attorney like Cade and a corporate lawyer like Brooke does. I do love this book and the whole series. I can't wait for the next book.”ALICE S wrote this review Saturday, April 6, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
