'overheard in the basement of an old building)

“And everybody, we have someone new joining us today. Let’s say hello to…was it Lola?”

“It’s La Lola actually. Hello, my name is La Lola, and I’m an addict.”

    (sympathetic murmuring) “Hello La Lola.”

“La Lola, could you tell us how your addiction started?”

“Well, it all started with Jordan Townsende, the rich and powerful Duke of Hawthorne. And how he marries Alexandra Lawrence, a naive country girl, after compromising her. They have a brief courtship, and Jordan is torn between being charmed by her innocence, and feeling contempt towards her for what he considers to be her unschooled ways. Eventually, he leaves her in the country while going to London to visit his mistress, because he doesn’t view it as a true marriage, going so far as to mock it as a “marriage of inconvenience”.

A book that depicts the relationship between Jordan Townsende, a duke, and Alexandra Lawrence, a peasant girl and how it develops. I like this book as it shows how through the eyes of Judith McNaught, social barriers shouldn't restrict two people who love each other even if they are from two completely different worlds.

This is probably one of Judith McNaught's best works. I'm definitely a fan!
