“Dirk Pitt, with a little help from Al Giordino and his twin children, Summer and Dirk, is out to save the world again, this time from a businessman intent on controlling all the world’s rare earth materials. As usual the book cracks on at great pace, and involves many tense scenarios.
I would like to report that the master of this genre is not losing his touch, but sadly I feel that this book is not up to the rating level that I give to most of its predecessors – I did not find it holding my attention in quite the same way as previous books have done.
Once having the bit between his teeth, there is very little that Pitt will not do to defeat his protagonist, including endangering the whole of the Panama Canal with his antics. There are one or two too many coincidences or acts of timing that stretch the incredulity a little bit, and without which the successful out come would never have been achieved. Cussler himself makes his usual appearance, and yet again is not recognised by Pitt who has met him in so many adventures before!
Not a bad read by any means, but not quite up to the usual Cussler standard.

“It is up to Dirk Pitt and his NUMA team, Pitt’s children, and the FBI to discover why ship's are being scuttled and a Navy Top Secret Weapon has disappeared. As usual there is no lag in this action packed story full of on the edge of your seat reading. And Pitt's kids? I wish I had a pair.”Rory OBrien wrote this review Monday, June 10, 2013. “Book # 22 in the Dirk Pitt series
The plot detail is from Wikipedia, short and precise I couldn’t have said it better, although I did take the time and liberty to complement it with my own thoughts.
“This book is about a secret prototype attack submarine the United States is developing and the efforts of a ruthless multimillionaire who wants to seize it by any means and sell it for a hefty profit. This millionaire antagonist also is bent on monopolizing most of the world’s rare earth mineral mining operations and sells these minerals for a huge profit. This novel has many subplots and is set in a variety setting throughout the world. These subplots involve many characters, as well.
This adventure takes the NUMA group on a wild trip and opens in the usual format with a prologue setting the stage this time in the Indian Ocean in October 1943. Then the setting shifts to the present day near a mining facility in the Majave Desert where we meet the villains and the succeeding chapters could only leave us breathless as the many characters drifts in and out of the story, each time with abysmal intensity.”
This thriller is an action packed tale of international intrigue, old fashion adventure, is very intense and hard to put down. Once again the father and son team bring their fictional duo and the NUMA team in a rip-roaring, globe-spanning adventure I enjoyed quite a bit.”

“A big disappointment overall. It took me 2 months of forced reading to get through this book, which is not usual for me with the Dirk Pitt series. The first 3/4 of the book was so tedious. I only gave it a 3 ★ because the last part read like a fast paced Pitt adventure. In this adventure an Austrian business man is in kahoots with the Chinese to corner the rare earths market and to steal the US plans for a stealth submarine which is powered by the rare earth elements. The action runs from Asia to the Panama Canal. It features Pitt, Giordino, Dirk and Summer. A less than satisfying read.”Raspberrymocha55 wrote this review Monday, March 25, 2013.
