Scotland, 1519, twenty-six years before I was born. It was deep in winter and the sound of rushing water penetrated even the stone walls of that room. Black-running-water, down below where the castle foundations cleaved to rock on the side of the river bed. Black-running-water, carrying our cursed family name in every drop. Black water carrying our downfall, from the west where our enemies, so close, were paused.
