If you read this book, you should read "Ladies of Missalonghi" by Colleen McCullough (the author of Thorn Birds). You will find interesting similarities that have made many wonder if and why she deliberately plagiarized. Hummm... What do you think?

I felt like it was a one dimensional book. None of the characters were real people for me. So ....very different than Anne of Green Gables. Who couldn't love Anne with all her feelings and emotions running over. I probably would have felt different about it if I had read it as a young person. What was wrong with Valancy, why did she take all that crap from all those relatives.

I love this book. A perennial favourite I return to over and over, along with the "Anne" series. It's not just beautifully written, but gives hope to anyone feeling trapped inside their lives and lost in family expectation. Breaking out can be good - being "insane", even better!
