Owly is a kind-hearted and lonely owl that adults and children will easily care about. This book contains two nearly wordless stories that are told by clean and simple comic panels. A child who has not mastered reading by himself/herself will feel accomplishment at understanding this story without help. This series is cute and expressive with a wide appeal.

Owly: the way home & the bittersweet summer
    By Andy Runton
    Illustrated by Andy Runton
Published by Top Shelf Productions, Inc., 2004

    1st Grade - 5th Grade

This nearly completely wordless graphic novel follows the adventures of Owly and Wormy, a personified Owl, as he learns about friendship and more. The book contains to stories. In the first story, Owly saves Wormy from a thunderstorm, takes care of him until he's better, and they become the best of friends, as they both overcome fears together. In the second story, Owly and Wormy must say goodbye because its time to migrate. The panels are all in black and white and the actions are dictated nearly solely by the illustrations. This is a great book for children of a wide range of reading levels.

    Classroom Uses:
    - Children can follow the story line with only the pictures as a guide.
    - Children can use the pictures as a guide to fabricate the story
    - Children can write their own narration to the panels
    - Children can create their own page of a graphic novel using this as a model
    - Class discussion on friendship and saying goodbye

Owly. I have yet to meet a more lovable, empathetic, warm-and-fuzzy graphic novel character. His mild adventures take him around his forest home as he makes new animal friends and helps them along the way. The theme of friendship is so cleverly played out as Owly interacts with Worm and the Hummingbirds, without ever getting sappy or slow. The wordless format is perfect for older children who might be struggling with text - and yet, for myself, I liked how it made me imagine my own text in my head. It would be fun to hear an early reader "read" this book aloud. Owly is a great introduction to graphic novels or a fabulous addition to any collection.

A-dor-a-ble! I love this book!! Owly is sweet, and his loneliness is heartbreaking. Even without the use of narrative, and only minimal text overall, the meaning of the stories are clear and effective. I'm completely enthralled with Owly and can't wait to read more!
