A trawler’s net doesn’t always catch shrimp. Since man began fishing the waters of south Louisiana, strange and unexpected items have been found in nets and at the end of fishing lines. In Larose author Shane Hebert’s second novel Lord of Redemption, a fisherman’s fateful discovery reawakens a terrible mystery from Louisiana’s past.
Set in the south Lafourche area, Lord of Redemption centers on reporter Jill Breaux and ex-football hero Mike Steel as they are drawn into solving the mystery by a shared secret from their youth. From the waters of the Gulf of Mexico to the sugarcane fields along the banks of Bayou Lafourche, Jill and Mike wrestle with unraveling the mystery and the guilt of their secret.
Mike’s struggle is chronicled throughout the book, beginning with his childhood in a single-parent home to Jill’s eventual involvement through her investigations. The strong and confident persona Mike projects belies the helplessness he feels in controlling his destiny, knowing that ultimately he will be held accountable for his sins and the repercussions of the secret.
Jill’s story becomes entwined with Mike’s, and she examines what her life has been and what she wants it to become. She recognizes the tragedy of Mike’s past and the blame he places on himself, but she is determined to set things right because she realizes that her destiny depends upon Mike’s.
Readers of Hebert’s first novel The Ballad of Corey Robichaux may recognize the character of Mike Steel, who was a minor character in Ballad. In fact, Lord of Redemption is the second in a series of novels that will involve the storylines, Lafourche Parish area settings, and characters that were introduced in Ballad.
