Wow, what a shame it took me so long to mine this gem out of the stack. One of the best pieces of literature that I have read in the...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“Just started reading it and already really striking. It's similar to Black Boy and has the same author, Richard Wright. ”

Fearful, hopeless, lost, amoral main character (Bigger Thomas) acts out in criminally, sickening ways. When he murders a young, white woman, the inevitable accusations of rape are made and Bigger's fate is sealed. Decades before the civil rights movement begins to make some changes,
the author warns about the inevitable rage and rebellion bred in a society where some people (blacks, the poor) are despised, ostracized, and denied any means to improve their situation. ”
“Interesting read, but also depressing when Bigger keeps making all the wrong choices. ”
