One of those books that you pick up in a used bookstore, drop on your shelf, and forget about for a few years -- "eh, I really should read this at some point..." Wow, what a shame it took me so long to mine this gem out of the stack. One of the best pieces of literature that I have read in the...

I am reading this book now and I find it so exasperating! It's really getting on my nerves. My sister and I agree, that female black writers are better than black male writers. It's like someone never did anything nice for them or to them and they still abide by the woe is me mentality. As a...

Just started reading it and already really striking. It's similar to Black Boy and has the same author, Richard Wright.

Important historical work. Fearful, hopeless, lost, amoral main character (Bigger Thomas) acts out in criminally, sickening ways. When he murders a young, white woman, the inevitable accusations of rape are made and Bigger's fate is sealed. Decades before the civil rights movement begins to make some changes,
the author warns about the inevitable rage and rebellion bred in a society where some people (blacks, the poor) are despised, ostracized, and denied any means to improve their situation.

Interesting read, but also depressing when Bigger keeps making all the wrong choices.

It's like someone never did anything nice for them or to them and they still abide by the woe is me mentality. As a black person and I disappointed with many black writers and this is another one.
